It is time to reign in the blatant stealing that is happening in relation to “surcharge” fees that are added by some businesses for paying with a credit card – notably airlines, hotels, phone companies, utilities, etc.
When credit cards were first introduced in Australia, to encourage people to use them it was made very clear that there would be no charge to the user – that the credit card was no different from paying by cash or cheque, and that the business operator paid a small fee to the credit card company for the security and convenience of getting an immediate sale and payment.
Now that most people have a credit card, WE are being asked to pay for the privilege!
Not only this, but increasingly we are seeing more and more businesses applying extra charges for “late payments’, and these charges are far in excess of any actual costs incurred by the business as a result of a late payment.
Further, loan sharks and unscrupulous financial advisors are taking advantage of ill-informed consumers.
WE CALL ON GOVERNMENTS TO MAKE IT ILLEGAL TO CHARGE ANY MORE THAN THE RETAIL PRICE FOR AN ITEM, REGARDLESS OF METHOD OF PAYMENT; TO MAKE THE CHARGING OF SO CALLED “LATE FEES” ILLEGAL; AND TO HAVE MORE SAFEGUARDS FOR CONSUMERS WHEN BORROWING AND INVESTING.
